Sole Abortion Clinic on Texas Coastal Bend Sees Patient Surge

December 10, 2013 — The number of patients at an abortion clinic in Corpus Christi, Texas, has tripled since other clinics in the Rio Grande Valley closed because of new state regulations, according to the physician who runs the remaining clinic, the AP/Sacramento Bee reports.

Eduardo Aquino's Corpus Christi clinic is now the sole abortion provider along the Texas Coastal Bend. Although Aquino has been based in San Antonio for 13 years, he retained admitting privileges at a Corpus Christi medical system, which puts him in compliance with a state law (HB 2) requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at hospitals within 30 miles.

However, he said his clinic might be too small and outdated to comply with other state regulations that are set to take effect in 2014 (AP/Sacramento Bee, 12/8).
