Mont. Senate Advances Bill To Reinstate Family Planning Funding

April 16, 2013 — The Montana Senate this weekend advanced a budget bill that would restore $4.6 million in family planning funds, the Billings Gazette reports.

The funding would support 26 clinics that offer contraception, screenings and other services, mostly to low-income women.

Abortion-rights opponents attempted to block the funding because some of the money would go to abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood of Montana. The amendment states that the funds cannot be used for abortions.

The inclusion of the family planning money helped secure Democratic support for the underlying bill. A final vote is expected on Tuesday (Dennison, Billings Gazette, 4/13).
