Columnist Urges Calif. Gov. Brown To Sign Women's Health Bill

September 12, 2012 —A Contra Costa Times column called for California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) to sign a bill (AB 2348) that would allow registered nurses to dispense contraceptives. Summary appears below.

~ Tammerlin Drummond, Contra Costa Times: "Allowing [registered nurses] to dispense birth control makes perfect sense," Times columnist Drummond writes, noting that currently in California, only doctors, nurse practitioners and certified nurse midwives are allowed to do so. AB 2348 would "reduce long wait times at community health clinics, where, because of physician shortages, women don't have easy access to contraceptives," she writes. Drummond notes that barriers to birth control access can lead to unintended pregnancy and abortion, adding that Brown should sign the bill "without further delay" (Drummond, Contra Costa Times, 9/10).
