Columnist Weighs In on Attack on Women's Health Care in N.D.

May 9, 2012 — A recent column responded to an attack on reproductive rights in North Dakota. The summary appears below.

~ Jane Ahlin, The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead: "[T]he language of Measure 3 promises nothing but trouble," columnist Ahlin writes about the North Dakota ballot initiative that states that "[g]overnment may not burden a person's or religious organization's religious liberty." Ahlin writes that the proposal aims to "infringe on the rights we all enjoy as citizens by authorizing religious actions of individuals and organizations as long as they stem from 'sincerely held religious belief(s).'" According to Ahlin, under the bill, if "a pharmacist opposed sex outside of marriage, he or she could insist that a man or woman provide proof of marriage before purchasing condoms or before a birth control prescription was filled" (Ahlin, The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead, 5/5).
