Utah Senator Drops 'Personhood' Amendment
February 13, 2012 — Utah Sen. Aaron Osmond (R) said last week that he would no longer pursue creation of a state constitutional amendment that would define life as beginning at conception, the AP/Columbus Republic reports.
In a Twitter post, Osmond said that he would no longer pursue the amendment so he could focus on reforming public schools in Utah. Similar proposals have failed to pass in three states, but there are at least 12 states currently pursuing "personhood" legislation.
Marina Lowe of the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah said, "I'm pleased he's not going that direction. It's something that has far-reaching impact, so I'm glad it's not being brought up at this stage of the [legislative] session" (AP/Columbus Republic, 2/9).
