October 22, 2015 — An intruder on Wednesday vandalized a Planned Parenthood clinic in Claremont, N.H., the AP/New York Times reports.
The vandalism follows arsons that have been reported at a Planned Parenthood facility in California and at a Planned Parenthood facility in Washington state within the last two months. According to the AP/Times, the increase in vandalism follows the release of a series of misleading videos targeting Planned Parenthood and related efforts to target the organization's funding.
Local police had increased their presence at the Claremont clinic following a previous act of vandalism on Oct. 6 in which the word "murderer" was spray-painted on the building, the AP/Times reports. The police were patrolling the clinic on Wednesday when they discovered property damage. They investigated and found a juvenile inside the building, who was taken into custody.
According to the AP/Times, the intruder in the latest incident destroyed medical equipment, computers, phones and plumbing fixtures with a hatchet. Claremont Police Chief Alexander Scott said the incident caused some flooding, which affected an adjacent business. Officials are still determining the degree of damage, Scott said, adding, "To put a dollar value on it at this point in time would be difficult, but it's going to be significant."
Scott did not provide information about potential charges for the juvenile taken into custody.
Scott noted that police would continue patrolling the clinic and "work cooperatively" with Planned Parenthood "to come up with the best plan" on how to proceed, such as by further increasing security for patients and clinic staff.
Planned Parenthood Responds
Referring to the most-recent incident, Jennifer Frizzell, vice president for public policy at Planned Parenthood Northern New England, said, "This illegal activity is the second incident in New Hampshire since the recent escalation of attacks against Planned Parenthood."
Planned Parenthood officials said they will resume providing care at the clinic as soon as they are able, the AP/Times reports. The Claremont location does not provide abortion care (AP/New York Times, 10/21).
