Senate Clears Way for Approval of HHS Nominee Burwell

June 5, 2014 — The Senate on Wednesday voted 67-28 to approve a procedural measure that limits further debate on Sylvia Mathews Burwell's nomination to be the next HHS secretary, Reuters reports (Morgan, Reuters, 6/4).

The vote Wednesday limited debate on her nomination to 30 hours, meaning that a final vote likely will take place on Thursday (New York Times, 6/4). According to the Washington Times, 14 Republicans joined Democrats in favor of advancing Mathews Burwell's nomination (Howell, Washington Times, 6/4).

According to Reuters, Senate approval is "widely expected" (Reuters, 6/4).
