January 28, 2014 — A new initiative from EMILY's List aims to emphasize Democratic female lawmakers' impact on policy and show that female candidates' political agendas go beyond abortion-rights issues, Politico reports.
According to Politico, EMILY's List's primary mission is to support and elect Democratic women who support abortion rights. However, since the historic congressional gains for female lawmakers in the 2012 election, the group increasingly has promoted a broader legislative agenda.
The new initiative, called the Impact Project, will further such efforts by tapping the group's three million members via social media and a series of events in Washington, D.C.
EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock said, "Women in Congress lead on all sorts of initiatives and issues, not just women's issues."
The group has endorsed 30 candidates in state and federal races so far this year. The endorsements include candidates in several high-profile races, including Alison Lundergan Grimes' challenge to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) in Kentucky; Wendy Davis' gubernatorial campaign in Texas; and Senate candidate Michelle Nunn's campaign in Georgia (Romano, Politico, 1/27).
